Thailand - It's History
Going back 15 centruries, Thailand's history can be broadly divided into five eras.
Nanchao Period (650-1238 A.D.)
The Thai kingdom was founded in 650 A.D. in the modern day Canton, Kwangsi and Yunan areas of Southern China. from there the Thai people migrated south all the way to the Chao Phraya basin and settled down in the plains under the sovereignty of the Khmer empire.
Sukhothai Period (1238-1378 A.D.)
In the 13th century Thais emerged as a dominant force in the region, gradually wresting independence from Khmer and Mon rulers. The independant kingdom of Sukhothai was founded by the Thai people in 1238 A.D. Considered the golden era of Thai history, It was named "the dawn of happiness" by its rulers. It was an ideal state in a land of plenty and was governed by paternal and benevolent kings, the most famous of whom was King Ramkamhaeng the Great.
