The Canals (Klongs)

Just a few decades ago, Bangkok was a maze of canals (klongs) that used to be waterways full of boats, contributing to the economic growth of the city. This Venice of the East, as many a Westerners have referred to it in those days, is now a big concrete jungle, most of the klongs filled up. The few klongs that remain are worth visiting, particularly on the opposite (Thonburi) side of the river. Although there are organised tours,a privately arranged trip exploring the smaller lesser-known and often tiny channels is much more rewarding. Numerous "longtail" public boats operate in this remaining network, and using these local services can be a wonderful experience. Unless you speak enough Thai to find your way around, a local guide is recommended.

Bangkok is changing fast, but if you still want a close view of traditional Thai life, explore some of Bangkok's canals (khlongs). The small interconnecting canals, branching out from the main Chao Phraya river, sustain a traditional lifestyle where mobile shops, "floating kitchens" and water taxi services ensure a local pace.

The recommended canal trips are along the Khlong Bangkok Noi - Khlong Bang Yai and along the Khlong Dao Khanong - Khlong Bangkok Yai - Khlong Bang Chuak Nang

  1. Trip along Khlong Bangkok Noi & Khlong Bang Yai

A boat service for this relaxing route departs from Tha Chang Pier frequently. This hour long trip (one-way) takes you to Bang Yai, a district in Nonthaburi. One of the notable temples (Wat) on this route is Wat Suwannaram, an ancient temple erected in the Ayutthaya period. It is noted for its magnificent murals painted during the reign of King Rama III. Wat Sisudaram is the temple where Sunthon Phu, a famous Thai poet who was designated by UNESCO as a classic poet of the world, used to stay in his childhood. Besides the monument to the poet, the multipurpose hall built in the Ayutthaya period is still well-preserved. Wat Nairong boasts murals depicting episodes of the ten previous lives of the Lord Buddha on the walls of its ordination hall. The highlight of Wat Phaowana Phirataram, erected in the reign of King Rama V, is its multipurpose hall built in the traditional Thai style.

Another notable sight is the Royal Barges Museum, a dockyard for royal barges used in ceremonial processions. Among the most magnificent are the Suphannahong and the Narayana Songsuban.

  1. Trip along Khlong Dao Khanong - Khlong Bangkok Yai - Khlong Bang Chuak Nang

Boats can also be rented at Chang Pier for this route.Notable among the attractions along this route are Wat Sai Floating Market, Snake Farm, Wat Pak Nam, Wat Ko and Taling Chan Floating Market.

Long tailed boats for private tours to these and other canals off the Chao Phraya can be rented from Tha Chang, Tha Saphan Phut (Memorial Bridge Pier), Tha Si Phraya and River City. The standard fare is 400 baht per hour. Prices can be negotiated (before travelling).
